Each gearbox—based on its appearance, model, and number of gears—can connect to a specific PTO model. In vehicles that use one or multiple identical gearbox models, it is possible to use a shared PTO model. This compatibility helps the power transmission system operate in an integrated and efficient manner and is also cost-effective.

When the PTO is connected to the gearbox, the process of transferring power and torque between the two systems is carried out optimally and efficiently. This connection is usually used to change the rotation direction, adjust speed, or transfer additional power from the gearbox to other parts of the machine or equipment.
To connect the PTO to the main gearbox, a mounting port is designed on the PTO that is square-shaped and has four holes. These holes are used for bolting to the main gearbox, and through these bolts the PTO is firmly attached to the gearbox. This connection ensures that the PTO is properly mounted with high strength and that the produced power is transferred effectively. The design provides easy and safe installation and helps prevent oil leakage or damage to internal components.
The gears inside the PTO must be designed to mesh with the gears of the main gearbox. This specific model is designed due to the need for precise gear engagement. The gears must have a specific form, size, and spacing to match the gearbox gears correctly. This precise design is essential to ensure optimal performance and effective power transfer. This Volvo PTO model has straight gears, which are located inside the PTO housing.
PTO units can be single-gear or two-gear. In the single-gear model, the gears are arranged in one row and are typically suitable for lighter systems with lower required power. This model takes up less space and is designed for general applications with lower loads.
Different PTO control models (manual, pneumatic, vacuum, and electric) are designed to match the specific needs of each system. These controls are responsible for regulating the transfer of power, torque, and rotational speed between the main gearbox and other system components. The goal is to prevent excessive load on system components, avoid part damage, and ensure smooth and effective power transmission. These controls enable equipment to maintain optimal performance under varying loads and working conditions. In Volvo S500 PTO units, the control type is pneumatic. This system is specifically designed to precisely regulate and manage power transmission to ensure correct and stable gearbox performance under different conditions.
The PTO connects to the pump to transfer power from the gearbox to the pump. This connection is typically made to supply power for driving pumps in hydraulic systems or similar applications. When the PTO is connected to the pump, it enables the rotational power produced by the gearbox to be transferred to the pump so the pump can perform its function—such as circulating fluids or generating pressure in hydraulic systems. This power transfer is essential for equipment that requires mechanical energy, including industrial machinery, heavy vehicles, and agricultural equipment. This transfer can also be done in three different ways: UNI, ISO, and cardan (driveshaft).
The PTO output rotation direction depends on the gear type and gearbox design, which can be single-row or double-row.
Single-gear gearboxes: In these gearboxes, the output rotation direction is usually opposite to the input direction. In other words, if the gearbox input rotates clockwise, the output is typically counterclockwise, and vice versa.
Two-gear gearboxes: In these gearboxes, the number of gear rows can affect power transfer and therefore the output rotation direction. Typically, in double-row gearboxes, more complex changes occur in the output rotation direction, and the output direction may vary depending on the exact system design. In this model, the output rotation direction is clockwise.
In this article, the most common PTO used for the gearbox of your target vehicle is explained; however, your vehicle’s gearbox may have been installed with a different specification than the common gearbox on the market in Iran. Therefore, to avoid any mistake in selection, it is better to read the gearbox number from the gearbox nameplate and, based on the gearbox serial, choose the appropriate PTO with consultation from our colleagues at Raman Shams Industries.
The dump body manufacturer or dump upfitting company decides which type of hydraulic pump and hydraulic valve(s) to use on dump trucks. So, if you want to replace your old pump with a new one, it is better to have a basic understanding of dump pump types so you can choose the right option. In this article, the most common pump model for your vehicle’s dump system is introduced, but it is recommended to consult Raman Shams Industries experts.
It means the PTO clutch/engagement mechanism operates with a pneumatic (air) actuator; therefore:
Smooth and fast engagement/disengagement using a pneumatic switch or in-cab valve
Higher safety compared to manual (cable) systems under heavy loads
Less wear on adapters due to controlled engagement
Periodically check gearbox oil level and quality (the PTO is usually lubricated by the same oil)
Re-check bolt tightness after the first 200–300 km of installation
Keep the air circuit filter and moisture trap clean
For heavy-duty use, inspect bearings and oil seals according to the manufacturer’s schedule
